Hole

by Pil Lee

There was a hole in the ground. Frank put his ear down to it but could hear no sound. He decided it was about big enough to climb into so he lowered his legs slowly and felt the edges for any holds. Almost immediately his right foot struck a large groove on the side and, putting all his weight on it, his left foot found another groove below.

He pulled both feet out and sat on the boggy bank of the river. Looking around he could see nothing but trees and small bushes, a quiet woodland scene. Nothing to suggest that there would be a ladder down a hole in the path.

He’d been following the girl now for over two weeks, and so far it had seemed a waste of time. This mission was on a need-to-know basis and all he?d been told so far was that she was “a person of interest”.

He’d judged their interest well mis-placed until he’d seen her disappear into the earth in front of him. Now he realised he’d made another rash assumption, and he vowed to ask his consolatrix for help in their next session.

For now though, he could feel the thrill of the chase start to rise and he discarded his coat and cravat. Making sure his fob was securely nestled in his waistcoat, he climbed quickly into the dark hole. He caught a whiff of rabbit as he went.
